Nagoya band VUW recall the understated early days of yonawo and Suchmos. Steeped in R&B and soul, they favour a subtle groove over big rhythmic swings. Debut full-length Inner Moon takes the night as its theme across 10 songs, from late-night street excitement to solitary calm; 'Borderline' pairs a hazy voice with a gently pulsing groove, while 'Ease' adds a touch of free-jazz saxophone dissonance. Out January 27, 2027 — their first vinyl release.
The first volume of Japanese label Kissing Fish Records' new 'Asian Voices' series spans Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia across 14 city pop, R&B and dream pop tracks. Highlights include Taiwan's Li Hua with 'Tian', Singapore's owellciao with 'afterglow', Filipino seven-piece brass band Lola Amour's Tatsuro Yamashita-tinged funk 'Lambing', and Indonesian T. Rucira's delicate folk closer 'Lalu'. Cover by Masashi Ozawa; CD only.
