Oleg Gotskozik Quintet — Oriental Suite
Jazz / Soviet Jazz / Central Asian 1979

Oleg Gotskozik Quintet

Oriental Suite

via Beethobear Records View post →

A rare 1979 jazz recording from Soviet Central Asia that weaves Uzbek traditional modes and melodies into jazz improvisation — no head-solo-head routine, just music unfolding slowly along traditional modes, building tension through subtle rhythmic and melodic shifts. Trumpeter Yuri Parfyonov's playing, full of delicate slides and ornamentation reminiscent of Eastern vocal tradition, gives the record a contemplative, mysterious, almost ritual air. Originally on Melodiya and long forgotten, it gets its first official vinyl reissue in 2026 via new Uzbek label Maqom Soul.

Yashlik

A Central Asian psychedelic rarity from 1978. Formed in 1973 at the Uyghur Music Theater in Almaty, Soviet Kazakhstan, Yashlik ('youth') was led by Murat Akhmadiev and layered jazz arrangements, electric guitar, drums and synths over traditional Uyghur melodies and folk instruments. Originally released on Melodiya and circulated only within the USSR, it returns nearly half a century later as the debut release of new Uzbek label Maqom Soul.

thistle. — backflip
Shoegaze / Grunge / Dream Pop 2026

thistle.

backflip

Starting from the ragged guitar aesthetic of Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr., UK trio thistle. pack both their dreamy and furious sides into just six songs — Shoegaze haze, Dream Pop drift and Hardcore punch that the press has dubbed 'grungegaze'. They've opened for Humour and Westside Cowboy and picked up BBC Radio 1 and 6 Music airplay. 'backflip' swings between soft vocals, woozy synths and sudden bursts of distortion, with candid reflections on identity and vulnerability hiding behind the noise.

Otomo Yoshihide & Ami Yamasaki with Uchinokura Dam Orchestra — Through Hollow
Experimental / Sound Art / Free Improvisation 2026

Otomo Yoshihide & Ami Yamasaki with Uchinokura Dam Orchestra

Through Hollow

In early summer 2025, Otomo Yoshihide and Ami Yamasaki descended into a cavernous, hugely reverberant chamber deep inside Niigata's Uchinokura Dam. Solos in dialogue with the space, voice-and-guitar duets, and finally a 45-member 'Uchinokura Dam Orchestra' turn the whole dam into one unruly instrument. With no electronic processing at all, voices, breath, water and small object sounds echo and pile up into vast waves using only the room's natural reverb. Released by Niigata's Experimental Rooms as a 2LP limited to 300 copies.

Tomo Katsurada & Jonny Nash — At The Emerald Pool
Ambient Folk / Dream Pop / Guitar 2026

Tomo Katsurada & Jonny Nash

At The Emerald Pool

A dreamy guitar duet between former Kikagaku Moyo member Tomo Katsurada and Dutch musician Jonny Nash. Their collaboration began in 2024 when Katsurada invited Nash onto his debut EP 'Dream Of The Egg', and they've since performed together in churches, temples and festivals. Psychedelic, slightly distorted guitars soak into misty vocals — sometimes sweet as dream pop, sometimes like ambient folk in morning fog — the two guitar lines slowly entwining until they're nearly indistinguishable.
