Steamin' With The Miles Davis Quintet

In 1956 Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones — the 'first great quintet' — cut the Van Gelder sessions later split into Cookin', Relaxin', Workin' and Steamin'. Steamin' was the last to appear, in 1961; its opener 'Surrey with the Fringe on Top' is taken at a crawl, Miles's warm, restrained muted trumpet leading the band. Reissued for Miles's centenary in Craft Recordings' Original Jazz Classics series: all-analog mastering by Cohearent Audio, 180g RTI pressing, tip-on jacket.

Sonny Rollins — Work Time
Hard Bop / Jazz 1956

Sonny Rollins

Work Time

Recorded at Van Gelder's studio in 1955 and issued by Prestige in 1956, with Ray Bryant on piano, George Morrow on bass and Max Roach on drums. The record sprints out of the gate as Rollins takes Broadway standards apart and rebuilds them — explosive yet witty and melodic, with his interplay with Max Roach the standout. An all-analog Original Jazz Classics reissue on 180g RTI vinyl with a tip-on jacket.

Àbáse — Laroyê
Brazilian / Afrobeat / Jazz 2022

Àbáse

Laroyê

Hungarian producer Szabolcs Bognár's cross-border project Àbáse recorded this debut in Rio de Janeiro and Salvador with Brazilian players including Letieres Leite, Luciane Dom and Antônio Loureiro — a Gilles Peterson favorite. It runs from the kalimba-led Afrobeat/breakbeat opener 'Ile Ye' to the polished samba soul of 'Oya' and 'Agangatolú,' lit by Loureiro's vibraphone and airy flute. The 2022 pressing sold out fast; this 2026 180g 2LP repress comes in a heavy gatefold with new cover art, in a limited run.
