Recorded in a run-down farmhouse basement, it pairs thrift-store synth tones and monotone chanting with layered walls of broken guitar and a low, heavy bass line. The result is suffocating, and that worn-out sound made it a one-of-a-kind punk holy grail at the turn of the millennium. The 25th-anniversary edition is remastered from the original tapes, comes in an embossed silver-foil sleeve and includes a 12"x24" replica poster.
A new album from Norwegian musician Carmen Villain on Smalltown Supersound. It draws on Pauline Oliveros's Deep Listening and Apichatpong Weerasethakul's film Memoria, and its subject is memory as it fades and changes shape. Flute, clarinet and trumpet recordings are taken apart, rebuilt and run through dub production, piling up deep low end and long reverb tails with a hint of Jon Hassell's 'Fourth World' mystery. Instead of leaning on melody, it uses layering, silence and space to let sounds rise and fade away.
