Led by legendary British trumpeter Ian Carr, Nucleus were among the most important pioneers of 70s UK jazz fusion. This 1974 Vertigo release blends jazz, rock and funk, with electric piano, brass, guitar and thick bass grooves constantly interlocking. Side B is a three-part suite driven by funky drums — it even carries a hint of hip-hop. Reissued by Be With Records from the original Vertigo masters.
The only album by Baltimore five-piece soul group Optimistics, released on Turbo in 1970 and produced by the legendary George Kerr — its sweet harmonies and lush strings stand level with The Chi-Lites and The Delfonics. It drifts between slow ballads and light funk, soaring falsettos carrying that romantic, faintly melancholy 70s sweet-soul feel. Long championed by Pete Rock, with 'Should I Let Myself Go' sampled by Knxwledge. The near-impossible original is reissued by Be With Records, mastered by Simon Francis and cut by Pete Norman.
