Gamelan Music of Bali: Field Recordings 1973-74

via Tokyo Buy Buy Diary View post →

Field recordings made in old Balinese villages between December 1973 and January 1974 by Deben Bhattacharya, the Bengali ethnomusicologist, filmmaker and radio producer. Four long recordings, one per side: music for a prince's cremation at the coastal village of Puri Karangasem, Wayang Kulit shadow theatre drawn from the Mahabharata, the good-versus-evil Barong dance drama, and the headlong Trunajaya dance. Looping gongs and layered metallic resonance ring out in open air, almost trance-inducing. Bhattacharya never scrubbed away the ambient surroundings, so you are placed directly in a temple courtyard fifty years ago. First vinyl issue via Death Is Not The End, 2LP limited to 300 worldwide.

Joseph Jarman & Anthony Braxton — Together Alone
Free Jazz / Avant-Garde Jazz 1974

Joseph Jarman & Anthony Braxton

Together Alone

A mysterious 1974 collaboration between two AACM members, Joseph Jarman and Anthony Braxton. Side A is full of silence and introspective long tones, the two playing almost in parallel without meeting; on Side B percussion and synthesizer seep in from that vacuum, generating noise-shaped chaos that turns out to be luminous. They separate again on the closer, leaving golden particles in the air — the noise was never pollution but the light produced by keeping distance rather than conversing. Cover art by Turtel Onli, a key figure of the Black comics era, painted in his early twenties as an expression of Rhythmism.

George Otsuka (ジョージ大塚) — Sea Breeze
Jazz / Modal Jazz / Jazz Funk 1971

George Otsuka (ジョージ大塚)

Sea Breeze

A 1971 date from the important Japanese jazz drummer George Otsuka, with a quintet of Hideo Ichikawa, Takao Uematsu, Shunzo Ohno and Takashi Mizuhashi. It moves freely from waltz and blues to soul and funk; the title track rides Ichikawa's electric piano and Otsuka's groove into thick seventies air, while the highlight is a near twelve-minute modal reconstruction of The Beatles' 'The Fool on the Hill'. Decades later Mike Peden and Tony Higgins picked the title cut for BBE's 'J Jazz: Deep Modern Jazz From Japan 1969–1984', pulling it back into view. Reissued by Spin This Now!

Isao Suzuki (鈴木勲) — 自画像
Spiritual Jazz / Experimental 1980

Isao Suzuki (鈴木勲)

自画像

Isao Suzuki's singular 1980 solo album, made entirely by himself. Double bass, Hammond organ, vocoder, taishogoto, erhu and his own voice, all stacked through multitrack recording — and he handled the composing, the playing, the cover painting and the liner notes too. His free-roaming spiritual experiments and low-end aesthetics are pushed as far as they go, making this the record that mirrors his artistic soul most directly. Now repressed on heavyweight clear vinyl.

Isao Suzuki (鈴木勲) — Samba Club
Jazz / Bossa Nova / Latin Jazz 1981

Isao Suzuki (鈴木勲)

Samba Club

A 1981 session between the internationally known bassist Isao Suzuki and his Three Blind Mice-era ally, pianist Tsuyoshi Yamamoto. Brazilian rhythm runs through the whole record, and with a top-tier cast including Takayuki Kato, Ichiro Doi and Donald Bailey, the unbridled improvisation and elastic bass build a genuinely festive mood. Repressed here on heavyweight clear vinyl.

Masahiko Togashi (富樫雅彦) — Guild For Human Music
Free Jazz / Avant-Garde Jazz / Spiritual Jazz 1976

Masahiko Togashi (富樫雅彦)

Guild For Human Music

A November 1976 landmark from Masahiko Togashi, finally given its first official reissue after a full fifty years. He assembled a large ensemble — Masahiko Sato, Shigeo Suzuki, Yoshisaburo Toyozumi, Keiki Midorikawa, Yoshio Ikeda — of three woodwinds, keyboards, cello, two basses and three sets of percussion. The six movements, 'First Expression' through 'Sixth Expression', manufacture freedom not from melody or from violent clusters of notes but from space, repetition, timbre and collective improvisation. This was never a lost record rediscovered later: it took Swing Journal's Japanese Jazz Award the year it came out.

Derek & The Dominos — Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs
Blues Rock / Rock 1970

Derek & The Dominos

Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs

The peak of Eric Clapton's career, locked in a dream duel with Duane Allman. Released in 1970, it carries the immovable 'Layla' and 'Bell Bottom Blues' plus a cover of Jimi Hendrix's 'Little Wing', and the two guitars' flaming slide lines and torn solos stand for blues rock at its absolute height. It is also the only Derek & The Dominos studio album — it landed flat at the time, failing to chart in the UK at all, and only years later was crowned Clapton's greatest work. This pressing is a transparent blue vinyl limited to National Album Day 2026.

The Cranberries

Live At The London Astoria II 1994

A Cranberries live album once believed lost, finally restored and released by Interscope this year. It spans the stretch from their 1993 debut to the 1994 breakthrough of 'No Need to Argue', with 'Linger', 'Dreams' and 'Zombie' all present. As a document of how they went from Dublin to the world stage during rock's most crowded moment, it rather speaks for itself.
