The cover's palette hints at liminal-space unease, but inside is a soft, easygoing instrumental funk record. Melbourne's Karate Boogaloo keep refining the minimal-funk aesthetic they've worked on for close to twenty years, building the whole album around a 'concise as haiku' idea — each track starts from one thought and gets pared down to its leanest form. 'Tremendous Fantastic' pairs crisp drums with a sticky bassline and slippery guitar. Out on US soul label Colemine Records.
Let Your Hair Down
A seven-piece boogaloo soul band from Melbourne, with members drawn from Karate Boogaloo, The Pro-Teens, Surprise Chef and The Teskey Brothers — effectively a summit of the city's soul/funk scene. After their debut 'Waiting Room' grew into an underground favourite, they returned to the attic studio where they cut it (since demolished) and finished this self-titled second album in a single weekend. Eleven instrumentals fold minor-key funk, psychedelic percussion and heaps of horns into something loose, playful and full of groove.
Shoebox Days EP
The latest EP from California trio Brainstory. Lead track 'The Watchers' sits on a hip-hop-indebted groove laced with horn lines, jazz and psychedelic textures — loose but sticky. The Shoebox of the title is the cramped Long Beach studio they ran for years, stuffed with instruments and gear, where they taught themselves recording and arranging. Shortly after handing the record to Big Crown they learned they had to move out, so the EP became an accidental farewell to the room.
The Pleasure Is Yours
Jazz drummer and hip-hop producer Karriem Riggins (J Dilla, Erykah Badu, Common) teams with experimental neo-soul singer-songwriter Liv.e as GENA for their debut. Liv.e's smoky, unvarnished voice slides into Riggins's warm, percussion-heavy world, pushing contemporary R&B, jazz improvisation and hip-hop rhythm somewhere new — already aired on Gilles Peterson's show. Pressed on 180g red-and-black splatter vinyl in an embossed sleeve.
Look Back Original Soundtrack
The long-awaited vinyl edition of haruka nakamura's score for the animated film 'Look Back' is finally confirmed. Details are still thin and the pressing is strictly limited, so move early. Quiet piano and strings form the understated layer that carries so much of the film's emotional weight. Arriving January 2027.
Sweets
Anything on Colemine is worth a listen, and The Winston Brothers return to the label after four years with the same muscular funk. Built on a 70s cinematic-soul foundation and drawing from Isaac Hayes, Willie Hutch, Roy Ayers and J.J. Johnson, it stakes out Hamburg's own corner of the soul world. Available on black and silver vinyl.
松原みきが選ぶ マイベスト16
Previously issued only on cassette, this 16-track selection — chosen by Miki Matsubara herself — gets its first double coloured-vinyl pressing, with the final artwork now confirmed. It spans 'Mayonaka no Door ~Stay With Me', 'Ai wa Energy' and 'Neat na Gogo Sanji', pulling from 'POCKET PARK', 'Who are you?', '-Cupid-' and 'Myself', with arrangements by Tetsuji Hayashi, Shigeru Suzuki, Akira Inoue and Masaaki Omura.
恋愛小説5 ~my white days
Tomoyo Harada — four decades into a career split between acting and singing — brings her well-loved 'Renai Shousetsu' covers series to a fifth volume, the first built around winter holiday songs, again produced and arranged by her collaborator of nearly twenty years, guitarist Goro Ito. It opens with Yumi Matsutoya's 'Surf Tengoku, Ski Tengoku', the theme to the 1987 film she starred in, finally sung by her almost forty years on. Also here: Quruli's 'Bara no Hana', Keisuke Kuwata's 'Shiroi Koibitotachi', Unicorn's 'Yuki ga Furu Machi' and 'Winter Wonderland'. Less a bustling Christmas record than a quiet, warm winter songbook.
Cyberpunk 2077: Future Sound of Night City
Night City's soundtrack gets its first coloured-vinyl pressing: a limited 45rpm yellow 3LP in a heavyweight three-panel gatefold with a sticker sheet. It's a tour of Polish techno, ambient, synthwave, bass music, industrial and IDM, with Lutto Lento, Earth Trax, Private Press and Foql among the names. Last five copies in stock.
Curtain Call: The Hits
A restock of Eminem's first hits compilation on double vinyl, collecting 'My Name Is', 'Stan', 'Lose Yourself', 'The Real Slim Shady', 'Without Me' and 'Mockingbird', plus the live 'Stan' with Elton John. Limited quantity at this price.
Newly Sentient Being
Mute releases Swans' farewell Berlin concert as a 4LP+DVD box and a 2CD+DVD set. The full performance runs over two hours and includes previously unreleased material, structured in five chapters — 'The End of Forgetting', 'The Merge', 'Paradise Is Mine', 'Newly Sentient Being' and 'The End of Regretting'. Marco Porsia and Peter Harton also filmed the show as a concert movie.
Time Traveler is among the most meticulous audiophile jazz reissue labels going, digging out long-out-of-print titles that command silly prices secondhand and cutting them all-analogue (AAA) with Stoughton tip-on sleeves, archival photos and new liner notes. This 1975 Muse Records original is widely held to be one of Clifford Jordan's finest sessions: recorded in Paris in March 1975 with the steady team of Cedar Walton, Sam Jones and Billy Higgins, it's unfussy hard bop with drive and lyricism to spare — hear 'One For Amos' and the tribute 'John Coltrane'. Cut by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab from the original analogue tapes.
