People in Sorrow

via Tokyo Buy Buy Diary View post →

The Art Ensemble of Chicago's free jazz landmark returns to print. Recorded by the quartet of Roscoe Mitchell, Joseph Jarman, Lester Bowie and Malachi Favors, it was issued in 1969 by EMI's Pathé Marconi and stands as one of the most important documents of their 23 months living in France. Across roughly 40 minutes it swings between violent free-jazz eruptions and vast, near-silent conversations, drawing on the group's huge arsenal of little instruments for tension and space. This play loud! edition is newly remixed from the original tapes by Moritz Illner and faithfully restores the 1969 French first-pressing artwork.

Tokyo Tea Room

Feel Forever

The British dream pop band Tokyo Tea Room — who appeared out of nowhere with the enigmatically sleeved No Rush — return with their second album. It unfolds with the same smoky, unhurried elegance as The Marias. Copies have always been hard to come by, and priced accordingly.

Jónsi — Shiver
Art Pop / Electronic / Experimental 2020

Jónsi

Shiver

The second solo album from Sigur Rós frontman Jónsi, co-produced with A.G. Cook of PC Music. On one side sits a vast, elemental Nordic soundscape; on the other, extreme synthesis that runs cold and sometimes abrasive. The collision pushes Jónsi's unearthly voice somewhere it hadn't been, with guest vocals from Cocteau Twins' Elizabeth Fraser and Swedish art-pop singer Robyn.

Suede — Beautiful Ones (30th Anniversary)
Britpop / Alternative Rock 1996

Suede

Beautiful Ones (30th Anniversary)

Richard Oakes had only just joined when 'Beautiful Ones' opened with that bright, reckless guitar figure and set the tone for one of Suede's best-loved singles. For its 30th anniversary it gets a first-ever 12-inch 45rpm coloured pressing, gathering every B-side from the original CD1 and CD2 — including 'The Sound of the Streets' and 'Sam', written alone by Brett Anderson and left off even the Sci-Fi Lullabies B-sides collection. Original sleeve designer Howard Wakefield returns to restore Nick Knight and Peter Saville's artwork.

The guest list spans generations and scenes: Jamie xx, Karen O, Nikki Nair, Jessy Lanza and Prentiss.

New Order

Brotherhood

Home to 'Bizarre Love Triangle', where guitar rock and synth dance music fuse into one of the defining songs of the 1980s — and the hinge on which New Order swung from post-punk toward the dancefloor. For its 40th anniversary it gets a one-time pressing on 140g crystal-clear vinyl, cut from the 2024 remaster.
