Afrobeat / Jazz 2020

Tony Allen & Hugh Masekela

Rejoice

via Beethobear Records View post →

A summit 40 years in the making: the sole meeting of Afrobeat drum legend Tony Allen and South African trumpet giant Hugh Masekela. The two vowed to collaborate back in the 1970s but only recorded when their tours overlapped in 2010; after Masekela's 2018 death, Allen — with the family's blessing — unearthed the master tapes and enlisted young British jazz stars Joe Armon-Jones and Mutale Chashi to complete this final testament in 2019. Reissued in a limited orange/pink/white splatter pressing for World Circuit's 40th anniversary. Out October 30.

Tapestry: Koto & The Occident — Hillside

Japanese instruments meet jazz-funk and rare groove: koto master Toshiko Yonekawa — designated a Living National Treasure in 1996 — joins composer Kiyoshi Yamaya and the Contemporary Sound Orchestra on a mid-1970s Nippon Columbia series. Dexter Gordon — Daddy Plays the Horn
Hard Bop / Jazz 1955

Dexter Gordon

Daddy Plays the Horn

Tenor titan Dexter Gordon rose meteorically in the 1940s but recorded sparingly in the '50s; this is one of that decade's key statements. Cut in 1955, from the swaggering, humorous title track to a deep and beautiful 'Autumn in New York', it shows his blend of power and melody — not fireworks but unhurried, generous ease. Reissued under Koki Hanawa from the mono master on 180g vinyl.
