A Time And Place
British electronic pioneer Dave Angel returns to Belgian legend R&S Records with his first full album for the label in 35 years. Across 3LP and 15 tracks he fuses jazz, soul, improvisation and richly layered electronics, keeping warmth and emotional depth inside precise grooves. Robert Owens lends vocals, while trumpeter Steve Waterman conjures a Miles Davis-like nocturnal poetry.
The Sojourner
Led by saxophonist Kalik Abdul Al-Rouf, The Ensemble Al-Salaam's 1974 debut on the legendary Strata-East label, reissued here by P-VINE. Voice runs throughout — from the Afrocentric "The Sojourner" to the fast modal tribute "Trace Of Trane"; "Optimystical" was later sampled by Andrés. Spiritual jazz, free improvisation and deep Black groove in one.
A Spirit Speaks
Bassist Bill Lee (father of director Spike Lee), famed for the tune "Coltrane," and his siblings recorded this sole album for Strata-East — a summit of spiritual jazz. The group is named for their enslaved ancestors Mike and Phoebe. Built on Bill Lee's warm, grounded bass and Grace's near-celestial wordless singing, it radiates the depth and solemnity unique to '70s spiritual jazz.
Getz/Gilberto
An affordably priced reissue in Verve's Essential Vinyl series of an eternal bossa nova classic. Stan Getz's saxophone meets João Gilberto's guitar and voice, with Antônio Carlos Jobim's compositions and Astrud Gilberto's vocals — birthing "The Girl from Ipanema" and a landmark fusion of jazz and Brazilian music.
