Ethiopian Musics 1971

via Tokyo Buy Buy Diary View post →

Following the acclaimed 2017 set Mindanoo Mistiru / Gold From Wax, Belgian label Sub Rosa returns to Ethiopia in the summer of 1971. Anthropologists Ragnar Johnson and Ralph Harrisson captured everything from the urban music of Addis Ababa to rural traditions built on the masenko fiddle and krar lyre — tavern songs, divination chants, laments and hymns. This deluxe 2LP adds 12 previously unreleased recordings, the most complete document of Ethiopia's astonishing musical breadth.
