A rare jazz recording deeply soaked in funk and soul. Saxophonist/flutist Byard Lancaster captured several 1974 sessions full of heat and life — feverish tributes to James Brown and Sammy Davis, joined by François Tusques (electric piano), Clint Jackson III (trumpet) and others. Officially reissued by French label Souffle Continu Records on 180g vinyl with Obi.
On overcast days, The Durutti Column's gauzy, trembling guitar lines come naturally to mind. This 1989 album, produced by Stephen Street (The Smiths, Blur, New Order), pairs Vini Reilly's signature classical/flamenco-tinged guitar with heavy sampling — operatic, folk and soul vocals chopped into ghostly phantoms drifting between melodies. Reilly was reportedly so unwell during recording he had to be wheeled in and out of the studio, yet the album captures the band at their most beautifully fragile.
